Located in an old bank building at the heart of Madrid’s ritziest shopping district, the Adler’s majestic presence fits right in amongst the designer boutiques and visiting celebrities. Neoclassical in style, the public spaces of this grand dame are covered in black and white chequerboard flooring, marble pillars and cushy burgundy and cream colours, whilst furniture remains blessedly untouched by modern hands, instead sticking to unfussy classics. The rooms, though old fashioned, are devoid of mothballs and frightening portraits of unknown ancestors, rather pulling in clean lines, high ceilings and simple four posters to pack a punch – plump for a junior suite and you’ll get your own fireplace and freestanding tub.

17.5 of 20. The building is a majestic old 19th century bank, totally refurbished and meticulously designed in a neo-classical style. The public spaces are floored in black-and-white checked tile, and the rooms make up for their cozy quarters with high ceilings and beautiful modern reproductions of classic furniture. The environment, though old-fashioned, feels designed rather than preserved — though pleasantly free of any abstract, blobby furniture or wacky Starck lighting, this is just as much a true “design” hotel as any of the white-on-white hipster hangouts.
