On sunny afternoons – and Madrid has plenty of those – Plaza Chueca fills up with local boys out to look and be looked at. To be honest, you could make one of the square’s establishments your base without missing anything – after all, the action is mostly outside – but Ángel Sierra at the north end is as good as any other. Know what you want before stepping up to the counter to order as the place is busy; a vermút and a serving of olives (aceitunas) make up the order for most of the locals.
