It seems every hotel in Madrid has a history, and the new ME is no exception. The property, built in 1923, has seen incarnations as a bullfighters den and a haute-couture hangout, before being snapped up by the Sol Melia group and made into one a ME, the chain’s superbrand of nightlife-centric fun. Its restaurant, Midnight Rose, is presided over by hot young El Bulli-trained chef Jaime Renedo dishing out popular fusion food, whilst the permanently packed The Penthouse rooftop bar is the result of American nightclub impresario Rande Gerber.
Luckily, rooms are less post-party crash pads rather than super-sleek spaces with a masculine edge and more technology than there are remotes for. Black robes and throws, hard edges and purple lighting mean frou-frou fanciers may be distinctly uncomfortable – though with the requisite 300 thread-count sheets in situ – there’s no pleasing some people. Check into one of the suites on The Level for a new, ahem, level of luxury and your own private lounge and VIP managers.

18.5 of 20. Actually, there could have been more — this was very nearly a Hard Rock, but the deal never quite took. In the end it’s more refined than the picture that name might conjure, but with the emphasis still pretty clearly on nightlife; it’s a member of the Sol Meliá group, with a lively tapas restaurant and cocktail lounge on the ground floor, and a rooftop bar impresario’d by the American nightclub maven Rande Gerber.
