Though more usually associated with the passions of Spain or the glamour of Paris, Picasso had an enduring affection for Britain and his work helped inspire not only a generation of British artists, but also encouraged the starchy British public to look seriously at this modern art nonsense.
Picasso and Modern British Art is the first exhibition to trace the story of Picasso’s work, fame and influence in Britain, with 60 works from the master himself (including career highlights like Weeping Woman and The Three Dancers) alongside more than 90 pieces by artists such as Duncan Grant, Wyndham Lewis, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Graham Sutherland and David Hockney who were in different ways inspired by him.
It’s a chance to look beyond the familiar squiffy eyes and bulbous bodies to see both the art and the artist in an unfamiliar and revealing new light.
