Taking the very best elements of the location’s history and the building’s legacy (originally a sausage factory and then a fish restaurant), Mark Hix’s eponymous restaurant offers a fuss-free selection of surf and turf, sourcing the best oysters and the finest cuts of meat from neighbouring Smithfield Meat Market. For those who are already struggling to decide between white and red, try the oyster and steak pie. Full of atmosphere, lots of the original fixtures and fittings have been maintained, from the wood flooring to the marble oyster bar, combined with clean tiled walls and simple furniture. Then there are the innovative bathroom doors, adorned as they are with zoomed in photographs of arseholes. Not as in people Hix hates – as in actual bottoms. Well, we like a little humour with our hamburgers.
