Petrus has something of a legendary history – its name alone stems from the spectacular selection of vintage Petrus wines, so good that a table of six investment bankers once spent over GBP 44,000 on an over-indulgent luncheon – back in the pre-crunch 2002 days, mind you. Then it was run by Gordon Ramsay protégée Marcus Wareing, before an acrimonious parting saw the name fall back into Gordon’s hands and a move one street down – it’s Wareing’s eponymous eatery that now sits in the old site at the Berkeley. Drama aside, this most recent incarnation offers up a modern European menu with a rather bargainous £25 three-course lunch on offer and some seriously tasty choices ranging from pan-fried sea trout and boiled beef cheek to spiced toffee apple and the moreish-sounding chocolate sphere. The space is even overseen by Hell’s Kitchen (the programme, not the NYC district) favourite Jean-Philippe, who’ll be able to help you make sense of the, erm, attention-seeking glass wine-cellar centrepiece.
