The only remnant of its strip-club past is a friction-worn pole in the middle of the circular stage – otherwise, Shadow Lounge plays up to its reputation as one of London’s finest, and original, gay clubs, only reinforced after its recent refurbishment.
Ostensibly a members-only venue, most manage to get in to the subterranean disco den circled by curtained off booths, purple backlighting and a fibre-optic stranded ceiling above the sunken dance floor which gets packed past midnight. Music is all dance classics, disco favourites and a bit of house in the early hours, and the atmosphere, whilst decidedly glamorous, is also relaxed and welcoming.
