Known as ‘the city of the dreaming spires’ due to the famous University’s undulating golden-stone architecture, Oxford is a bit of a fantasist’s dream. Its beautiful riverside location, charming local shopkeeps (including the real Alice from Lewis Carroll’s novels) and restaurants, combined with a serious historical pedigree, make this one of Britain’s prettiest Heritage Cities. Check out the gothically grand Bodleian Library, Sir Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, and the cathedral at the university’s grandest college – Christ Church. Foodies should stop by The Grand Café on the site of England’s first coffee house, book early for Inspector Morse’s favourite, The Trout, or have a drink in Oscar Wilde’s old haunt, The Old Parsonage Hotel. And lest we forget, the scholars here may be some of the brightest minds, but they’re still students; so there’s plenty of nightlife to choose from too.
