A favourite amongst fashion luvvies and PR darlings, The Mandeville caters to a sense of whacky whimsy with neon pink, purple and orchid strewn public spaces, a champagne tea designed by Zandra Rhodes (yes, she of the pink hair), and defaced portraits of HRH wearing much more makeup than the Royal Maquillage would usually permit. However, its location in residential Marylebone is second to none, and though the rooms are small, they are painstakingly detailed (if somewhat feminine). But then sometimes it’s nice to have a break from excessively masculine spaces, no? Oh come now, we all love a bit of pot-pourri.

17.5 of 20. With just shy of a hundred and fifty rooms, it would be pushing it to call the Mandeville a “boutique” hotel. But more than many high-end hotels, it’s got an aesthetic all its own. Call it a design hotel, but one for fashion designers, not architects and other monochrome types. These pleasant pastels are immediately distinctive, and a bit more welcoming than the standard beige and gray, though they’re swimming against the tide a bit when it comes to the London-bred taste for clubby, masculine spaces — the only thing masculine about the Mandeville is the first syllable of its name.
