Considering the fact this Firmdale property is located smack bang in the middle of Soho, it’s very cleverly hidden. Secreted down a side alley which opens out into the front courtyard, the red brick building is filled with colour and texture, from the funky lobby (complete with a 10 foot porcelain cat, courtesy of Botero) to the individually coloured guestrooms and suites. Large windows throughout keep the feeling light and airy (especially in the four penthouses, which have private tree-lined terraces) despite the somewhat hemmed in location, whilst the atmosphere inside the public spaces is usually one of close quarters thanks to the independent allure of the Refuel bar and a lovely honesty bar in the drawing room.

Sister to the Covent Garden Hotel, Soho Hotel is a bubble of cool calm, and therefore it’s also a surprisingly child-friendly hotel. Veer off Wardour Street and head towards a twinkly-lit porch to find a 10-foot porcelain Botero cat sculpture, oversized plant pots and a clash of driftwood and neon-tinted Perspex – a refreshing alternative to the marble and brass lobbies of most hotels in this postcode.

19.0 of 20. The only complaint one could possibly lodge is that the hotel’s immediate surroundings are a bit less than scenic; and it’s true that the neighboring buildings are all drab apartment blocks, which does little for the hotel’s views. But the Soho location is obviously highly desirable, and nobody seems to grumble—in fact one could argue that the ‘arty’ districts in any town are likely to be the most artlessly planned.
