Those who fantasise about a carriage-strewn, cobble street Dickensian London will appreciate this lovingly restored series of Georgian townhouses. Old, gilt-framed portraits, deep hued walls, carved four-poster beds and roll-top baths inhabit rooms named after famous writers and former residents, whilst inspiration for the suites include an 18th century courtesan and a renegade Duke. Of course you’ll find all of the modern amenities hidden in their rightful place, but you’re more likely to want to leave them behind here. Have a nosy around the sitting room, as famous authors staying here traditionally leave signed copies of their works.

Splendia

Just off Oxford Street, near Soho Square, sits a charming boutique hotel. Hazlitt’s is comprised of three historic Georgian houses, and within its walls are well-appointed, classically furnished accommodations. Old fashioned hospitality and friendly efficient service are guaranteed due to the hotel's smaller size. Hazlitt's provides quiet charm in a location away from the roar of the traffic, but within a very short walk of the most important attractions.

Mr & Mrs Smith

Part of the considerable charm of Hazlitt’s is that, despite its central location, its success is based solely on word-of-mouth recommendations. Spread across three historic houses in the heart of Soho, it takes its name from William Hazlitt, the 18th-century essayist who lived there.

17.5 of 20. It’s not quite on the same luxe level as some of the new high-end boutiques, but neither are its rates — you’re not getting (but also not paying for) a spa, a big-name chef, plasma-screen TVs, or any of the rest. It may sound a bit grown-up to devotees of the modern nightclub hotel, but for those of us who fancy a late-night browse through the sitting room’s literary collection (many signed copies left behind by visiting authors) rather than another cocktail in a hip hotel bar, this is the place.
