Whilst her own hotel is a study in minimalist architecture, here at Blakes Anouska Hempel’s handiwork has gone gung-ho with design. Sumptuous upholstery, antique furnishings and a cacophony of themes and colours abound, with suites taking on entirely separate identities from an Opium den Chinese room to stark black and white stripes. The common thread throughout is a distinctly couture approach to the choice of everything, from fabrics to amenities, and a clear appreciation for far flung lands and fantasy, far from this quiet residential area of South Kensington.

Mr & Mrs Smith
Blakes - the very name conjures up a whole era of modern decadence. Each room at Anouska Hempel’s South Ken boutique hotel has its own style, but all are inspired by various far-off lands: Russia, India, Turkey… The decor, while perhaps a little too redolent of the Eighties for some, is testament to Ms Hempel’s impeccable taste and astonishing attention to detail.

17.5 of 20. Somehow the design fever that has overtaken the hotel scene has failed to produce anything that can top Anouska Hempel’s eye for a maximally decorated interior, and in a world where blank walls and Scandinavian modernist furnishings represent the height of fashion, Blakes delivers the antidote to minimalism. Rooms are individually themed, whether British Raj or black-lacquered Oriental, and nothing is half-baked—in fact if you’re susceptible to sensory overload we can recommend something in white, like the Egyptian-themed Corfu Suite.
