This megalith for modern art stands rather imposingly on the banks of Thames with its strong, industrial silhouette housing the nation’s largest collection of contemporary art from 1900 to the present day. You’ll often find it making the most of its Bankside site with giant inflatable structures waving in the wind, whilst the giant central turbine hall often hosts unusual, special events such as the creation of the world’s largest salad and the annual Unilever Series. Thematic displays dominate the rest of the space, spanning decades and influential names such as Monet and Mondrian, wonderful examples of everything pop art to abstract expressionism, and bizarre sculptural examples as well as audio visual rooms – not to mention the spectacular view from the seventh floor restaurant.
