Berlin’s mayor is a member of the Social Democratic Party, and one of the most famous openly gay politicians in Germany. In the mayoral office since 2001, Klaus Wowereit coined the phrase ‘Ich bin schwul, und das ist auch gut so’ – ‘I’m gay, and that’s ok’ – proving that you don’t have to be straight to give good spin. Wowi – his nickname – has been with Jörn Kubicki since 1993. The neurosurgeon is 12 years his junior – the mayor is a Madonna fan after all.
