Having already done the hair of Marlene Dietrich and Romy Schneider by the age of 18, it’s hardly surprising that Udo Walz should become Germany’s best known celebrity hairdresser, tending to the locks of the likes of Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell and Angela Merkel. Besides his acclaimed updos, Udo has managed to call attention to himself by getting invited and then disinvited to a papal audience – apparently the coiffeur was too queer for the Supreme Patriarch. Baffling – we’d think that the Holy See would approve of his relationship with Carsten Thamm; 26 years his junior, this is the kind of relationship that the Catholic Church seems to specialise in.
