Making his name directing LGBT-themed films and shorts, Wieland Speck has been in charge of the Panorama section of the Berlinale, Berlin’s prestigious film festival since 1992. Working with Manfred Salzgeber, the two created the TEDDY- a reference to the golden bear statuettes given out at the Berlinale – in 1986, as a prize to the best gay and lesbian-themed flick. Wieland has since been instrumental in making the TEDDY an official part of the Berlinale and the awards ceremony is now one of Germany’s most important – and definitely the glammest – queer events.
