The concept of Bleibtreu – or “bleib true”, to stay true – may be a foreign one to many, but this family-run establishment in an old patrician’s house hopes to inspire a sense of commitment, at least to its lodgings, in its visitors. So what’s going to tempt you to stay? How about an in-house alternative medicine practitioner, an espresso bar and florist specialising in roses, or the free minibar and newspapers? If that’s not enough, settle for rooms which are super light and airy thanks to the use of simple, pale wood furnishings, striped artisanal wallpapers and big bay windows. Check out the ladder-cum-bedside tables which will make you feel like a kid in a hay-stacked barn – jump onto the beds and relive the childhood joy which came with not having to pay hotel bills. We’d come back for that alone.

This renovated house offers 60 beautiful rooms, Blue Bar, an Italian style café, Deli 31, a New York-style deli as well as a florists and physiotherapy centre.

18 of 20. Would it be impolite to say that identikit shades-of-white minimalism is looking a bit tired? Perhaps, but no matter, as there’s nothing of the sort to complain about here. The Bleibtreu may be all about simplicity, but there’s a lot of ground to be covered between simple and downright empty. In this case simple means there’s a certain unity to the décor, even when actual colors are used, like the occasional bold striped ceiling or mosaic-tiled bathroom.
