The Raval neighbourhood in Barcelona is home to some of the town’s shadiest characters and most talented pickpockets but also some of the coolest places and finest tapas. Here at Bar Raval in Berlin, it’s mostly the latter on offer although Daniel Brühl, the Catalonian-born German actor best known for his parts in Inglorious Bastards and Goodbye, Lenin!, will do his best to lighten your wallet.
Having fulfilled a lifelong ambition to open his own eatery, the result is a gratifyingly non-kitsch production set in an airy space peppered with leather bar stools and blonde-wood tables on imported fleamarket tiles from Spain under low-hanging lights. Vintage seltzer bottles line the grey rough-washed walls, with innocent Monocle-esque illustrations adding colour and whimsy.
As for the food? Get stuck into patatas bravas with fresh alioli, fried green peppers, huevos estrellados, cod fritters and beautiful jamón ibérico de Bellota. With prices per dish ranging from two to ten euros, it may not be cheap once the little dishes add up, but it’s a hell of a lot less than an airfare to BCN.
