An institution on Berlin’s gay scene, this old school rainbow-and-OTT queer club has been around long enough to go full circle from terribly passé to be embraced as ironic hipster cool and all the way back to be packing a mainstream crowd most weekends.
The space has grown larger – after spending its first eighteen years in Kreuzberg, SchwuZ is now in Neukölln – but its penchant for disco, retro pop and Schlagers (think 70s Eurovision and classic German earworms) remains unchanged. Every night, however, has a different theme, so check their website to know what you’re letting yourself into.
The rotating roster includes Electro Thursdays, Repeat for golden oldies, L-Tunes for the mega-dykes (their words, not ours – last Friday of every month) and Popkicker for fans of pop music and a game of table-tennis on the side. Most memorable? Probably the Dænzgedøns ‘bad taste’ dress-up party on the first Wednesday of the month.
