Leave Berghain to the club kids and tourist ravers; for a more authentic Berlin experience, Kater Blau is where you want to be. It’s from the guys behind the legendary Bar 25, who are now back on the original Spree-side grounds after having decamped to Kater Holzig on the opposite side of the river for a years.
Although the set-up has changed slightly, both concept and the core group of people in charge remain largely unchanged. As part of the Holzmarkt development, the vibe is typical ‘Berlin creative’ with ‘street art’ peppering the rough surfaces. It’s like your favourite student hangout, just with a grown-up, gay-friendly and media-heavy crowd.
Electro, dance and house music rules on the two indoor dance floors until the early hours (and non-stop Saturday through Monday noon). The outdoor area rocks whenever the weather permits, with drinkers flocking onto the wood-planked river space and the newly acquired Agnes boat (permanently docked) to chill, make out or make trouble.
The door can be picky so you may want to consider starting the night at FAME, the heir to Kater Holzig’s Katerschmaus restaurant, which is located on the same grounds. The staff can be rather haughty and uptight, but it’ll ease access to the club later, the place is buzzing and sceney, and the kitchen dishes up surprisingly delicious food.
