Prior to its destruction in 1945, the Adlon was home to the likes of Marlene Dietrich and Charlie Chaplin, a landmark for the Golden Age of starlets and glamour posses. It even served as inspiration for the hotel in Greta Garbo’s ‘Grand Hotel’ of 1932, where she uttered the infamous line, ‘I vant to be alone.’ Now, surrounded by foreign embassies and overlooked by the Brandenburg Gate, it would like you to believe you’re the dignitary in residence. To that end, the re-launched site boasts some of the biggest rooms in Berlin, a great spa (with decent workout facilities, too) and has lovingly recreated the stained glass dome in the lobby and gold plated ceilings, under which people still flock to get a taste of that old world glamour.
