Ironically for a former furniture store, it’s almost impossible to get a seat at this popular bar. Packed out with gays, lesbians, drag kings and queens and lost tourists (this place is sandwiched in between Turkish kiosks and unglamorous housing at Kottbusser Tor), Möbel-Olfe is also home to local hipsters, artists and slackers.
Cruising isn’t high on the agenda (though Thursdays are notably more populated with Berlin’s gay crowd), but it’s worth seeking this spot out for a little unpretentious warm-up fun even if you do end up hitting more hard-core clubs later. DJs take to the decks from 10pm, playing mostly indie and rock.
Finding it at the bottom of a converted ten-storey warehouse can be a challenge, so once you’re in, fight your way to the front and scribble your order on a beer mat from a menu drawn on the wall tiles. Beer is the name of the game here, with Polish and Czech varieties coming highly recommended and plenty of German types on tap. Be warned – forget paying your tab and you’ll be leaving armless (house rules, what can we say) – which at the fair prices shouldn’t be an issue.
