As far as department stores go, Peek & Cloppenburg may not be the most radical, but it sells high-quality clothing and doesn’t bother with extraneous household goods, kitchen utensils or toys on the side. However, it’s hardly worrying the likes of Selfridges with its visual merchandising. Which is why the recent arrival of ‘Fashionation’ – a kind of wooden framework tagged into an empty space at the back of the Berlin store – is interesting.
The ‘store in a store’ looks a little like a tradeshow with makeshift booths hosting a changing roster of designers, offering up a little pizzazz in what could be, for fashion fanatics anyway, be termed a slightly frumpy environment. Expect more avant-garde labels and peruse Helmut Lang, Acne, Unconditional, Levi’s Vintage, Dsquared, Givenchy and Comme des Garçons.
