If you thought Taschen had the monopoly on beautiful coffee table tomes in Germany, think again. Less ‘Big Penis Book’, more ‘here’s a big building which looks like a penis’, Gestalten have long been publishing inspirational volumes on everything design and architecture related, and now they’ve got their very own store.
Like all the best ‘concept stores’ it combines a healthy amount of the literary (including rare archive items that fans will swoon over) with designer nick-nacks (think Bearbricks, quirky Lola Goldstein ceramics, and Japanese-imported novelties) that make good gifting options for the fussy. Look out for the speciality collaborations with their own stable of designers including Marcel Wanders, Artecnica and Jaime Hayon.
There are also the obligatory in-store exhibitions featuring artists and designers the company has worked with in the past as well as acting as a platform for new names. If visual culture is your porn, you’ll find this even more titillating than Taschen’s Big series.
