Marrying brutalist architecture (the building is known as the ‘Golden Cage’) with a Rick Owens-inspired luxury punk aesthetic, this second property from Thomas Tänzer and Elmo Hagendorf, the stylish duo behind the nearby Lux 11, caters to Mitte’s hipsters and creative tribes, in a location that’s hard to beat for convenience.
Yet, despite its raw, urban style (think graffiti art on the walls and sharp angular furniture), the 88 rooms here are firmly focused on comfort, making the huge beds the undisputed centrepieces. Massive – space-hogging, some might say – wing-backed installations, the duvets for the two-by-two meter mattresses can allegedly cover six (though it’s hardly encouraged).
Less massive are the in-house facilities. With no gym (nor any pre-arranged agreements with an outside health club), and the tiny spa open only between 09-21, you’re mostly left to mingle with local media types and fellow guests in the Schwartz bar or in the 24-hour club and snack lounge on the ground floor. The rooftop deck is pleasant in summer, but often closed off for private events.
iPads are available for loan (with free Wi-Fi throughout) and TVs have been replaced by iMacs, a move that really sums up the hotel – either you’ll love it, or you’ll think that it’s another case of putting style over substance.
