Bar 25 was something of a Spree-side legend, with drinkers flocking to the cool river space with its airy tented spaces for long, late summer nights. But don’t get too nostalgic; on the opposite side of the water, Kater Holzig has picked up the mantle.
Run by the same core group of people and set in the ruins of an old soap factory, the vibe is typical ‘Berlin creative’ with ‘street art’ peppering the rough surfaces. It’s like your favourite student hangout, just with a grown-up, gay-friendly and media-heavy crowd.
Prepare for some good clean (ahem) fun in the indoor-outdoor ground level bar space which features a programme of film screenings and theatre before electro, dance and house music rules until the early hours, with ‘hangover feasts’ to combat the effects of the night before.
Do consider starting the night at the in-house Katerschmaus restaurant on the third floor. The theatrical staff may be rather haughty and uptight, but the place is buzzing and sceney, the dimmed mood lighting makes everybody look good, and the kitchen dishes up surprisingly delicious food.
