Not since Thomas the Tank Engine has a railway station been this exciting. The Hamburger Bahnhof’s amazing Neoclassical facade is worth seeing alone (especially when lit up by Dan Flavin’s blue and green neon light installation) but, technically, the real treasures are in the Museum for Contemporary Art that now resides within. Focusing on art since 1960, its collections include pieces by Andy Warhol and Cy Twombley, artist’s rooms by John Cage, Bill Viola and Carolee Schneeman, as well as video installations and rarely seen films. And if you’re here at lunchtime, then take the opportunity to refuel at local celebrity chef Sarah Wiener’s outlet here. Much better than your average museum café and outstanding pastries in particular.
