In a land full of sausages and cake, it shouldn’t be too hard to amass a company of fat ladies to sing, and this is most likely where you’ll find them. The opera house not only puts on festivals like Wagner Week, but also houses the national ballet company with performances of Schneewittchen and Schwanensee on offer, as well as regular recitals of works by Verdi, Rossini, Strauss and Tchaikovsky. Unlike other opera houses, the space here is ornamentation free – leave the ballgowns at home boys – and the slick interiors are focused on maximum visual and audio impact; with over 100 world premieres under their belt, it’s clearly working.
