Mitte

Mitte

Meaning ‘middle’ in German, Mitte is Berlin’s core borough, its historic centre and a bustling nightlife hub, all rolled into one. If elsewhere all roads lead to Rome, in Berlin they end up here and the tour buses ship in the fanny-packed, camera-touting tourists, well, by the busload. Big cultural attractions include Checkpoint Charlie, the Museum Island and Brandenburger Gate, whilst the central square – Alexanderplatz, centre of the old Communist Berlin – is where you’ll find the iconic TV tower. You’ll also find lots of cool hotels, art galleries and top notch restaurants inhabiting the beautiful old buildings (and newer ones – the zone has been one of non-stop construction), set up by entrepreneurial spirits after the Wall, which used to run right through this area, came down.
