Even without mention of the cheek bones, David Bowie has always been an incredibly fascinating creature to marvel at and this retrospective curated by London's V&A brilliantly retraces his shape-shifting transformation from Bromley teen to ultimate British pop icon.
More than 300 objects are here to document the extraordinary journey that saw the artist create and bring to life such iconic characters as glam alien Ziggy Stardust and the suave Thin White Duke. Clever use of audiovisuals and headsets let visitors take a ride along part of that journey.
The show features photography from master snappers like Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts and Brian Duffy, and includes everything from hand-scribbled lyrics to elaborate set designs, though it’s the costumes that stand out. Here’s a chance to see masterpieces like Alexander McQueen’s Union Jack coat, Kansai Yamamoto’s striped Aladdin wonder and Freddie Burretti’s bodysuits up close.
Buy your ticket online in advance to avoid queueing. Tickets sold out in record time in London, Berlin and Paris and the exhibition is expected to draw massive crowds here at the Museu del Disseny in Barcelona, too.
