Sonar, started more than ten years ago, when electronica was still considered a niche thing for chain smoking, French-looking hipsters, has grown into the world’s preeminent festival of “advanced music and multimedia art” and takes place in Barcelona every year during three days in June.
In recent years headliners have included more commercial and internationally renowned names like Grace Jones, Orbital and Scissor Sisters – a far shout from its early days when it was merely a beach party dedicated to experimental music – but it remains a reference point for electronic culture and new media trends.
The day sessions around the grounds of CCCB and MACBA in the heart of Raval are popular for their chill out and party-in-the-sun atmosphere, while the night sessions at the massive exhibition halls of Fira Gran Via 2 is more of a multi-stage night club with live performances.
