Sometimes it’s the quietest voices that make the most noise. Think that’s a romantic sentiment? Wait until you see the works of Eugene Delacroix, said to be the quintessential example of the French Romantic art movement.
Whilst the name may remind you of Christian Lacroix rather than ring Picasso-style bells, he was the man behind illustrations for Shakespeare’s printed works, as well as the precursor for the Impressionist movement.
Inspired by passion and the exotic, his paintings may not always be sentimental (slaughter is hardly a mood-maker), but do include recurring themes of violence and lust which should get your blood boiling one way or another.
With pieces split into three time periods and brought together at the Caixa Forum from the Louvre in Paris, London’s National Gallery and the Met in NYC, this is a comprehensive study sure to get you rethinking dinner and a movie.
