SOMETHING SMELLS LIKE 'MO
Who didn’t love Britney’s spoof commercial? Made last year for MTV’s LOGO channel, it introduced “Mo”, her fictional new fragrance. “One spray and the gays will run your way,” the ad promised.
Well, this Spanish perfume maker either didn’t see it or just didn’t get the joke, so last night Perfumes Hedone proudly introduced ‘Eau Mo – an Eau de Toilette Pour Gay’ to Barcelona’s gay community at the Axel Hotel.
Not that we can actually think of any recent scent that hasn’t been squarely targeted at the gays - unless we’ve somehow misinterpreted the flesh, pec and nipple bonanza in the ads - but a team from 60by80 went, curious to discover what a gay gay perfume smells like, if it’s not of Britney. Maybe a waft of dark room, spunky base notes of chlorine, heart of things best left out of print?
No, supposedly this baby “smells like the man we are inside, the man we’d like to be.” Promising. But we sniffed and, frankly, weren't too pleased with the trapped men who revealed themselves.
Eau Mo is heavy-hitting, slightly feminine and unfortunately evokes neither Tom Ford or Baptiste Giabiconi. However, we’ll readily admit that it could be used to mask many of our less desirable traits – being strong enough to cover up both silent farts and any evidence of dark room visits.
It’d make a great prank gift or a fun pr-eau-mo (ha-ha), but these guys are Spanish – no jokers. The perfume is concocted by highly respected “nose” Michel Girard, creator of smelly waters like Dunhill Pursuit, Cerruti Pour Homme and Paco Rabanne 1 Million, and it’s priced thereafter – regular-sized flasks go for EUR 58 to 68, close to what you’d pay for high-end ‘pour hetero’ stuff.
We’re all for smelling gay, but in our book that means smelling fabulous, not adhering to any labels on the packaging.
Eau Mo available online or from El Corte Ingles. 50ml flasks EUR 38-48, 100ml EUR 58-68.
