Although the drinks list is equally long and impressive, Ultramarinos Santa Mónica is not to be confused with the nearby gin bar on Sant Pau. More than an escape from the tourist hell of Las Ramblas, here’s an actual reason to dive head-first into it.
There are better tapas to be had around town, for sure. Nonetheless, everything on the menu here is more than passable, beautifully presented and then there are dishes like the tortilla with sobresada and Mahon cheese or the huevos estrellados con gulas which are excellent, full stop. And while there’s no shortage of cheaper places, few come with anything like this kind of setting.
Because this isn’t just another show-off, grandstand design from Lázaro Rosa-Violán, the undeniably talented but also increasingly ubiquitous interior designer. No, this place is as fun and entertaining as it’s impressive, and that’s exactly what you’ll want for a boozy lunch with friends or a night out with co-workers. Note that while the place is large enough to usually accommodate walk-ins, reservations are recommended.
