It was the combination of sun, sand and sangría that made Spain register as a holiday destination back in the days, so it’s only fitting that sangría is finally getting its due. Usually made from the cheapest wine possible, if not coming straight from a Don Simon tetra brik, here at Casa Lolea it’s being treated with respect.
Know that in Barcelona, under normal circumstances, bar sporting a Mexican sombrero, few things scream tourist more than a jug of the red stuff on the table. But Lolea use their own recipe and each serving is given the same attention as if it were an artisanal gin and tonic. It’s no coincidence that the same kind of oversized bubble glasses are used. More importantly, the result is excellent.
Besides sangría (and a decent selection of wine and vermut for holdouts), there’s also a menu of very decent tapas – make sure also to check out the blackboard for daily specials – and quality tinned conserves. Open all day, every day of the week, it’s a great place to wander off to for a light meal and a refreshment. Booking recommended for weekend lunchtime.
