Charming and photogenic, Trópico is tailor-made for the Instagram generation. Although also open for dinner, it’s the brunch menu – available every day of the week – that brings most people to this place a block down from Rambla del Raval, in part because they’re one the few places in town that take reservations for weekend brunch.
Started by a Brazilian and Colombian, South American flavours naturally dominate but there’s inspiration from around the globe – not just the world map carved into the wall of the main room. The brunch plates range from specialties such as açai bowls and arepas (stuffed with scrambled eggs) to the more conventional like pancakes and eggs Benedict. It ain’t gourmet but it’ll fill you up.
While the food can be a bit hit or miss, there’s nothing wrong with the drinks. You can order cocktails but most will stick with one of the many fresh fruit juices and smoothies. If the arepas left your arteries feeling clogged, then a papaya, pineapple and passion fruit blend should make you feel all cleansed again.
