Proving that meat doesn’t always have to come in tapas-sized morsels, Casa Paloma has moved the local populace from small plates to the inordinately large to become a fan favourite in the more bourgeois part of town.

Trendy brasserie upstairs and cool lounge bar in the basement, the ubiquitous designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán has stamped his signature homely Barcelona-meets-NYC industrial-chic style throughout the place: Well-loved leather sofas and reclaimed wooden tables mixed with exposed warehouse ceilings, ceramic tiles and flea market finds. Wondrously quirky, it works.

As for the aforementioned meat, choose from super soft Argentinean Angus, flavour-packed aged Frisian, or costly Wagyu steak for cooking over the quebracho grill. Alternatively, if you like your protein straight from the source, there’s the tartare bar. Much like the sushi variety, you can sit and watch your meat being minced and mixed.

You’ll also find more conventional raw foods with seafood and fish options from tuna and salmon to monkfish ceviche, as well as traditional Catalan dishes made from old school recipes your granny would’ve been proud of. But, make no mistake, the meat’s the real draw here. Well, that and the pre- or post dinner vermouths in the Confidencial bar down the stairs.
