Whilst Barcelona may have a handle on its own cuisine, it’s never exactly been heralded as the Spanish home of sushi. Most ‘Japanese’ joints are more like touristy Chinese remixes, with more deep-fried fritters than deep-sea critters.
So for those looking for a more authentic experience without going Koy Shunka all-out, then Doble Zer00 has come as something of a relief. Whilst the chef doesn’t exactly hail from Tokyo (hey, Chile isn’t that far off base…), he does know his sushi.
And let it be clear that people come here for the food rather than the décor. Best described as ‘urban decay meets rustic Last Samurai’, it’s definitely comfortable and cosy but not exactly the place for a show-off date, unless you’re very hungry and very in love already.
The lunch deals are excellent value, but ordering from the regular menu should still be within most people’s budget. While sushi is the raison d’être, favourites include the duck with orange sauce and the signature Mosquito rolls (a reference to the chef’s former restaurant rather than size).
