If you’re looking for a menu of Thai dishes where the chilli pepper heat-indicators actually mean something, then Bangkok Cafe may be your best bet in Barcelona. You see, for all their machoness, the Spanish will squirm at anything spicier than plain vanilla. Food-wise, too.
Located down a quiet, tree-lined residential road in the otherwise nondescript area of Sants, it’s a neighbourhoody joint with no pretensions; just an open kitchen serving ten tiny tables, a blackboard of specials and bottles of Singha while you wait. (Reservations advised or you may be turned away; it’s busy.)
Replacing lacklustre Pad Thais and the generic assortments of battered meat over egg fried rice, here you’ll find starters bursting with fresh flavours, from a mint-strewn Larb Kai salad to the papaya and red chilli Som Tam.
The Kaeng Pet Ped Yang duck curry main and the house stir-fried chicken special are highly recommended, with sticky mango and coconut ice cream on offer if you have room for dessert. All of this comes at a pretty sensible price too, so you can start saving for that Southeast Asian air fare.
