Barcelona’s hotels are slowly catching on. There may still be no staff who speak decent English, but they’ve finally come around to opening up their fabulous terraces and rooftop bars to non-staying guests. Here is our favourite pick for every day and occasion, be it Club-sized (younger, party-ish), Queen-sized (stylish) or King-sized (ritzy).
Yurbban Trafalgar RoofTop.
Size isn’t everything. This compact pool deck packs in some killer views of the old town, all the way down to the sea. Hustle your way in before sunset.
Trafalgar 30, Sant Pere (Pl. Urquinaona). Mon-Sun 13-23.
La Terraza de Duquesa de Cardona.
The hotel isn’t particularly noteworthy but the rooftop is, enjoying great views of the old port. Live music on Mondays and Sundays to bookend the week.
Passeig Colón 12, Gótico. Mon-Sun 12-24.
Terrace at Mercer Hotel Barcelona.
Not much of a party terrace, but the location in the heart of Barrio Gótico makes this small and luxe rooftop bar a nice summer destination.
Lledó 7, Barrio Gótico. Mon-Sun 20-23.
360 at Barceló Raval.
A trendy spot in the midst of the happening, but still dodgy neighbourhood. Sweeping (360 degree) views of town and the occasional hipster knees-up.
Rambla del Raval 17, Raval. Mon-Sun 18-01 (Fri-Sun until 02).
Skybar at Grand Hotel Central.
Possibly the most spectacular deck in the centre, with its infinity pool and close-up view of Barcelona’s rooftops. Best during the week when it’s less crowded.
Via Laietana 30, Born. Mon-Sun 20:30-01.
The terrace at this little five star boutique property, a gem, may be small but the views of the Port Vell superyacht marina are unparalleled .
Passeig de Colom 9, Barrio Gótico. Mon-Sun 12-21.
Sky Bar at Axel Hotel.
The epicentre of gay action in summer, you’ll always find boys on the prowl at the Sky Bar but it gets particularly busy Wednesday night and Sunday late afternoon.
Aribau 33, Eixample Esq. Daily 20:30-01:30.
VISIT UP at Hotel Pulitzer.
A mixed, not unattractive crowd fill this place for its after-work session with live music on Wednesdays, and offers DJs Thursdays and Fridays, too.
Bergara 8, Plaça Catalunya. Tue-Sun 18-24 (Fri until 02).
El Terrat del DO Plaça Reial.
From up here, the infamous plaça looks quite stunning, and with a full-service gourmet restaurant, just eat, drink and be merry on top of this luxe boutique hotel.
Plaça Reial 1, Gòtico. Mon-Sun 19-24.
Terraza Chill-Out at OhLa.
Hotel OhLa may be a classic case of style over substance but when you’re only there for drinks, then things like a gimmicky see-through pool are kinda fun.
Via Laietana 49, Gòtico. Mon-Sun 19-24.
La Terraza de Hotel Villa Emilia.
Petite and intimate, there are live music sessions Thursday through Sunday and a snack menu from the BBQ if you feel peckish.
Calàbria 115-117, Eixample Esquerra. Mon-Sun 19:30-23:30.
Terraza de Arola at Hotel Arts.
The outdoor space of the hotel restaurant from Michelin-starred Sergi Arola. Drinks, gourmet nibbles, and live music on Thursdays in front of Frank Gehry’s fish.
Marina 19-21, Vila Olímpica. Wed-Sun.
Purobeach at Hilton Diagonal Mar.
It ain’t Ibiza but if money is no object, then this pricey pool deck has good DJ sessions and is nice for a sunset drink.
Passeig Taulat 262, Diagonal Mar. Mon-Sun 10-sunset (until 23:00 June-mid Sept)
The Box Social at Hotel Brummell.
Small and boxed in by other other buildings, it doesn’t get much more urban than this hipster fave in the up-and-coming Poble Sec district.
Nou de la Rambla 174; Poble Sec. Mon-Sun until 23:00.
La Terraza del Claris.
The classic al fresco meeting point in summer for the Barcelona establishment, with a DJ providing the soundtrack for your mojitos Thurs, Fri and Saturday nights.
Pau Claris 150, Eixample Dreta. Mon-Sun 11-02.
Pool deck at Silken Diagonal.
Set amidst the highrises of Diagonal Mar, the tenth floor pool deck feels very LA with DJs Thursday through Sunday - check the agenda for special parties, like Sònar events.
Diagonal 205, Poble Nou. Mon-Sun 12-02.
Terraza de Hotel Omm.
Wallpaper*ish, like the rest of the hotel and the guests who stay there, with live music on Thursdays (20-22:30) and DJs Tues-Sat (22:30-24).
Roselló 265, Eixample Dreta. Mon-Sun 19-01.
Dolce Vitae at Hotel Majestic.
It used to be a pretty dusty affair, but a little revamp has transformed the Majestic’s terrace into a nice little urban oasis.
Passeig de Gràcia 68, Eixample Dreta. Mon-Sun 09-02.
Wet Bar at W Barcelona.
Every Sunday evening sees Ibiza-style chill-out sessions here. It’s very W, expensive and full of gringos, but happening and with gorgeous shoreline views.
Pl. Rosa del Vents 1, Barceloneta. Mon-Sun 10-02.
Technically this is a members club but the Sunset Sunday sessions on its waterside terrace in the old port are as hopping as any hotel rooftop.
Moll de la Barceloneta 1, Port Vell Barceloneta. Mon-Sun 08-01:30.
Terrat at Mandarin Oriental.
Now that this seriously sweet space, with amazing views of Passeig de Gràcia, has been opened to the public (but only after 18:00): Go.
Passeig de Gràcia 38. Mon-Sun 11-01 (Thur-Sat until 02).
