Set in a converted palazzetto in the heart of the historic Gothic Quarter, you’d be hard pressed to find a more unique place to lay your head. Whilst the rooms are luscious and the bathrooms an homage to medieval luxury, it’s not without its drawbacks: it could do with a lick of paint and a little TLC; the taxi won’t always take you all the way, and you’ll have a challenge on your hands navigating through the narrow streets, alleyways and dead ends of Barrio Gotico just to get here. Yet we never hesitate to recommend Neri Hotel & Restaurant to anyone looking for a truly special place to stay. As in its sister H&R establishments from Anima Hotels, the restaurant can be recommended, and the Japanese style rooftop garden is a beautiful oasis in a noisy city.

This super-sexy stay is housed in an 18th-century palace, with an extremely dramatic interior that combines Gothic architecture with super-modern flourishes. Neri Hotel & Restaurante is contemporary – not in a minimalist way – but with the original features preserved and presented in a cutting-edge context. There are mad pieces of art dotted about on exposed brickwork, and gilded mirrors hang on stone walls.

18.5 of 20. In any old stone building, light is at a premium; all the more so in this densely built district, with its narrow streets and alleys. Thus the decor seeks to brighten and expand the space, and in fact the smaller rooms compensate with lighter, more neutral color schemes, in a palette of light greys, greens, pinks and lavenders. Clean and crisp design frees up space as well — these rooms are mercifully free from ornate reproduction antique furnishings, outfitted instead with built-in desks and bedside tables.
