Well-designed, with in-house restaurant Ávalon overlooked by a Michelin-starred chef (Ramón Freixa) and service that is fine if not outstanding, by all means and purposes Grand Hotel Central is another run-of-the-mill Barcelona boutique hotel. However, wedged right between shopping hub El Born and the historic Gothic Quarter – and only a stone’s throw from gym bunny central DBoy – the location gives it a favourable edge. Converted from office blocks, it avoids the hubbub of Via Laietana via a long entrance hallway leading into a calming oasis of minimalist design, and perhaps the most spectacular rooftop pool in the centre of Barcelona.

Splendia
Grand Hotel Central is located in the centre of the city, next to Barcelona’s cathedral, with spectacular views of the entire Gothic district and the ancient city walls. The hotel’s surrounding are now some of the trendiest in Barcelona, notably the El Born district, with many surprising shops, designer bars and restaurants scattered throughout its narrow streets and well-lit plazas.

Mr & Mrs Smith
Bang in the centre of the Barcelona bustle, Grand Hotel Central provides respite for many a weary traveller, shopper or culture-hound. An imposing 1920s façade masks a warm and well-lit modern retreat, where visitors can watch the city unfold from the eighth-storey roof terrace, then swing back down into the urban action, a doorway’s width away.

18.0 of 20. Inside it’s well-equipped for business or pleasure; each of the 147 guest rooms features crisp white linens, spotless glass doors, a large flat-screen television, high-speed internet access, and conveniences like an oversized work desk, a hands-free telephone, and ruthlessly efficient soundproofing. Luxurious bathrooms contain anti-steam mirrors and roomy bathtubs. And fully half of the guest quarters are actually rather extravagant, either expanded Executive rooms or full-fledged suites, with high ceilings and huge windows facing out to the cathedral.
