To get to the best beaches on the Costa Brava – small sandy coves, crystal clear waters, and dramatic cliffs – you’ll need wheels of your own although a bus service can get you to some of the villages from where you can explore the area by foot. Nearest to Barcelona, there are some excellent small beaches on both sides of the tourist nightmare of Lloret, like Cala Banys with its pleasant bar-restaurant and Canyelles on the other side. Further up the coast, recommendable stops include Platja de Illa Roja and Cala de Aigua Xelida by Begur for the secluded cove experience, and Calella de Palafrugell (not to be confused with Calella de Mar) and neighbouring Llafranc for the small fishing village feel.
