Over 80 years on and Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavillon looks as contemporary as anything. To imagine that it was built at the same time as the Palau Nacional in the backdrop is mindboggling. After having been built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition, this stunning piece of architecture – emblematic of the Modern Movement – and its floating roof was disassembled in 1930 only to be reconstructed 53 years later.
Stop by and admire the groundbreaking structure and clean lines, but save yourself the admission if you’re looking to be entertained. Bare, except some carefully planted copies of the purpose-designed but ubiquitous Barcelona Chair, the attraction is the serenity of the building itself.
